Catalog Update

“Dollars have never been known to produce character, and character will never be produced by money. I’ll invest my money in people.” - W.K. Kellogg

Kellog of course is one of the originals Titans of Industry or Captains of American commerce, the guy that gave us corn flakes, he was also a philanthropist. I realize as I start out on this adventure of nursery management, that I’m not going to be the next Titan of American Capitalism with my small specialty list of bulbs and rock garden plants. However, I am making great efforts to establish a working business model with the new expansion. I’m lucky to have some great folks around me that have invested in me and I have invest in them. This year I have been helped out by so many people I need to thank, Joleen has been an amazing partner helping me with all the new challenges that this difficult time in business has thrown at me. Her brother Eric who is an amazing machine operator for help with some of the construction projects at the nursery. I owe a thanks to Jane McGary for making it all possible, she is perhaps one of the most generous of philanthropist that I have ever met, and if anyone would understand that quote above about investing in people it would be her. A big thanks to Jason and Andrew of Trusty Switchblade who made this website possible. Truls and Emma of Wild Ginger farms invested in my future with a kind donation of Daphne cuttings from their amazing collections to help me get a start. Diana Reeck is another person I have invested a friendship in and it’s paid a wonderful dividend of plant knowledge, business advice and good will that has developed out of that. Her Erythroniums are a major feature in this years catalog.

Erythronium ‘Best in Show’

The catalog is coming very, very soon. I’m in the final stages of digging the in ground bulbs, having made it through the greenhouse blocks that were slated for this years repotting. Diana’s Erythronium’s are beautiful this year, with nice quantities of large bulbs, This year we will be offering, ‘Best in Show’, ‘Inner Glow’ and the ‘Pacific Sunset Strain’ from her Walter Blom hybrid selections. These are amazing, fast clumping show stoppers in the early season garden.

The rest of the catalog is going to be chock full of some great rock garden, alpine’s and xeric plants that have done well in the heat for me, and the bulb list will feature our usual range of diverse, hardy choices from Allium, Fritillaria, Camas, Gladiolus, Scilla, Triteleia, Crocus, Colchicum, Narcissus and many, many more.

Check back often in the next few days as I’m hoping to get the catalog posted as early as possible the first week of August.

Cheers,

Mark
