Hortlandia Sale
This Friday and Saturday you really need to be at the Wingspan Event Center at the Washington County Fairgrounds, click here for directions. There is something at this plant sale for everyone, but for rock gardeners this one is super special. Not only will the illahe tables be loaded with great plants, but the Columbia Willamette Chapter of the North American Rock Garden Society has a sale booth with choice rock garden plants as well click here for details. Not only that, but legendary Portland plants couple, Jan and Dave Palmer are there with Shady Companions where they grow some mind blowing Ericaceous and other plants for shady gardens with so many choice dwarf selections. They split there booth with Chuck Buyakas another NARGS chapter member who grows some amazing plants. If you are on the fence about this sale, book your ticket now. That only touches the tip of the ice berg for amazing plant vendors, Dancing Oaks, Secret Garden Growers, Van Hevelingen Herb Nursery, Cistus Design, Windcliff plants, the list goes on and on (full list in link above) and that doesn’t even count the awesome locally made tool and garden art vendors. If money is no object for you, you could build out an entire botanical garden with one stop shopping at this sale. But enough talk I’ll show some plants that I’ll be featuring:
Hope to see you there! It’s going to be a fantastic sale and some of these plants won’t be offered again for another year. To many to list, but here are a few, Phlox, Whalenbergia, Calceolaria, Draba, Antennaria, Penstemon, Dianthus (6 stunning dwarf selections!) Arenaria, Daphne, Dwarf Iris, Androsace, Silene, Solidago, Geranium, Gypsophila, Lewisia and Lewsiopsis (9 different selections!!!) Dwarf wallflowers (even if you don’t plan to buy, stop by to take whiff of these fragrant beauties) Erigonoum, Raoulia, Helychrisum, Clematis, Acantholimon, even a hardy creeping Protea!! WHAAAT???? Loads of dwarf and compact plants, plants for dry spots where the water won’t reach, plants for wet feet were there is too much water, we got it all! Don’t miss this sale!
Is that enough snake oil selling for you? If not I’ll try another appeal, with the state of the economy and the hostile corporate take over underway, small business needs all the help it can get. Main street America are these local plant vendors, come and support them and some of the non profit groups like the North American Rock Garden Society, Rogerson Clematis Garden, Greater Portland Iris Society, American Bamboo Society, Portland Rose Society, just to name a few.
There is an old Levon Helm lyric that goes something like “farming is $10 of effort for $5 of profit”, Well I got "$17.50 in effort in on this years crop, so I sure do hope to see you at the sale (if you are wondering about the 50 cents, I consider that spare change the effort on this blog and the necessary evil of running a website).
Green thumbs leaving dirt on the keyboard so I better get back to making more plants.
See you at Hortlandia! You won’t be able to say the weather kept you away because it’s going to be epic spring like weather!
Cheers,
Mark
