Winter Won’t Let Go

“Intentions, good or bad, are not enough. There's luck or fate or something else that takes over...”
John Steinbeck, The Winter of Our Discontent

Narcissus wilkommii-one of the beautiful, and fragrant Spanish Jonquills blooming in February’ s snow storm

This is the winter that won’t quit, it’s a balmy 21 degrees out as I write this with a blanket of white snow covering everything. This winter has seemed extra cold and damp. I’m still waiting for a little bit of luck with the weather and our typical false spring, where we get a week of temps in the 60’s and some sunshine to kick off the flower season. I was hoping to get out out and prune the apple orchard soon, but the lows into the teens are putting a damper on that. A little luck did allow for one project that has been in the planning for along time to make a February completion. The dry stack retaining wall around the seed propagation beds. I’ve been wanting to do a wall planted with alpines for a long time, this will showcase alpine treasures that can be grown vertically in crevices. I can’t wait to get planting it when the spring weather kicks in. Check out the gallery for the play by play and stay tuned for the planting tutorial!

I’m working on the Spring catalog, hoping to have it out in March with April shipping on the alpine and rock garden plant list. Here is to hoping for some milder weather soon and a little luck wouldn’t be bad either.

Cheers,

Mark
