Colchicum agrippinum
Nicely checkered blooms! I think that Colchicums are some of the best of the new plants for our changing climate in Oregon. They naturalize without using any of the precious resource water, but can take almost flooded conditions in the winters new deluges, the leaves make a showy, bold statement, belying the drought tolerance. Ok, so you have to deal with the leaves dying back for a couple of weeks every year, but just when you forgot they were there, BAM, they smack you in the face with these huge pink and white blooms just as everything else is coming to an end with summers heat and falls chills.
Originating from the Mediterranean region, particularly the Balkans and Western Turkey, Colchicum agrippinum thrives in temperate climates. It is well-suited to USDA hardiness zones 4 through 9.
Rock gardens, woodland gardens, or borders, where its stunning flowers can be fully appreciated. Its unique checkered blooms make it a conversation piece and a beloved choice for gardeners looking for something different.
