A low-growing, mat-forming perennial native to southeastern Europe, particularly the Balkans. This charming species produces soft yellow flowers in summer above small, silvery leaves. Ideal for rock gardens, troughs, or edging, it prefers well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Drought-tolerant once established.
I have long enjoyed this plant since I saw it growing at the Berry Botanic Garden where I was stricken by the absolutely silver grey foliage. I think since I first started learning about alpines and how the different adaptations of evolutionary biology work, I have been enamored with the different forms. Silver leaves to protect from intense sunlight, cushion forming habit to protect from intense winds, low growing habit to nestle among rocks to be able to withstand harsh Mediterranean summer.
Hardy to USDA zone 5 (–20°F / –29°C).
