Lilium formosanum var. pricei
known as Price's lily or the formosa rock lily it is native to Taiwan. This variety of Lilium formosanum typically grows in mountainous areas and is often found along forest margins or rocky, grassy slopes at higher elevations. It thrives in well-drained, moist soils and it is quite hardy if given a well drained soil, surving here in the rock garden through snow and ice and temps into the low teens, indicitive of it's mountain roots, where it produces beautiful, trumpet-shaped flowers that can be white or often purple striped, the flowers are fragrant and early summer bloom time makes for a great show. No staking needed on this dwarf, but large flowered lily.
Named in honor of Dr. David Price, a botanist known for his work on the flora of Taiwan. The specific epithet "pricei" acknowledges his contributions to the study and understanding of the plant life in that region. The name reflects the tradition in botany of naming species after individuals who have made significant contributions to the field or to the study of particular plants.
