Maihuenia poeppigii
A low-growing, mat-forming cactus native to the high Andes of Chile and Argentina. This unique species features spiny, succulent pads and vibrant yellow flowers in spring. Exceptionally hardy for a cactus, it tolerates temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F) when kept dry. Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil—ideal for rock gardens or alpine settings. Great Crevice Garden/rock garden plant. Chile/Argentina.
Don’t forget where you planted this one and walk around the rock garden barefoot, it will remind you in a painful way!
One of the toughest cactus I have ever grown for a soggy, wet NW winter does not faze it as long as it is given good drainage. My original plant was from the Berry Botanic Garden where it made a huge mat.
