Petunia patagonica is a striking, compact perennial native to the windswept steppes and rocky slopes of southern Argentina and Chile, particularly in the Patagonian region. Unlike its more familiar garden cousins, this wild petunia showcases a rugged beauty with its gray-green, downy foliage and trumpet-shaped, pale violet to lavender blooms that appear from spring through summer. The flowers are often veined with deeper purple and have a subtle, sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators.
Considered a challenging species to grow outside of its native blustery and arid landscape. I think good airflow is certainly a necessity. The tight and dense foliage can harbor fungus in moist environments. Full sun and sharp drainage go without saying as do a solid green thumb and some luck, at least here in the wet pacific northwest, growers in Colorado seem to have less challenges.
