Raoulia haastii
Haast's raoulia or the alpine vegetable sheep, is native to New Zealand, particularly in the South Island. It is primarily found in alpine and subalpine regions, thriving in rocky, well-drained soils, often in areas with harsh, windy conditions. This plant is typically located in scree slopes, open grasslands, and exposed mountain ridges. Raoulia haastii is known for its distinctive mat-forming growth habit, creating dense cushions that can help it withstand the challenging environmental conditions of its native habitat.
Named in honor of Sir Julius von Haast, a prominent geologist and explorer in New Zealand during the 19th century. Haast is well-known for his extensive work on the geology and natural history of New Zealand, particularly in relation to the Southern Alps. He made significant contributions to the understanding of the region's flora and fauna, and the naming of Raoulia haastii recognizes his impact on New Zealand's botanical studies.
A big thanks to John Tsutakawa and Kiamara Ludwig from the Gardens at Lake Merritt in Oakland for making these great selections of Raoulia available, they really do grow them better than anyone I've seen outside of New Zealand.
