Silene acaulis 'Eagle Summit'
Moss campion selection with dark emerald green foliage, and a perfect cushion forming habit. The larg pink flowers have very dark corolla's giving an amazing show. This is our own selection from the White Mountains of Alaska. Not far from the arcitic circle, the 3, 600' mountains aren't high by elevation standards but certainly in Latitude they make up for it.
Early explorer Hudson stuck, who was one of the first people to climb Denali's South Peak, wrote, "The Eagle Summit is one of the most difficult summits in Alaska. The wind blows so fiercely that sometimes for days together its passage is almost impossible. ... The snow smothers up everything on the lee side of the hill, and the end of every storm presents a new surface and an altered route. ... there is no easier pass and no way around."
That is exactly the kind of environment you will find fantastic rock garden plants in! This has proven to be a tough winner in our hotter and drier than average summers now. Staying a dark green and often reblooming a bit in the fall.
