Triteleia laxa, commonly known as Ithuriel’s spear, is a perennial flowering plant native to western North America, particularly California and southwestern Oregon. It is a member of the Asparagaceae family, previously classified in the Liliaceae family. This plant is well-known for its clusters of star-shaped, bluish-purple flowers that bloom on long, slender stalks, which can reach up to two feet in height. The flowers form an umbel at the top of the stalk, creating a striking visual display.
Triteleia laxa thrives in a variety of habitats, including grasslands, open woodlands, and coastal scrub areas. It is commonly found in areas with well-drained soils and full sun to partial shade. The plant is adapted to the Mediterranean climate of its native range, which features wet winters and dry summers. As such, it grows and blooms in the spring and early summer, becoming dormant during the dry summer months.
Ithuriel’s spear is a popular choice for gardens due to its vibrant flowers and its ability to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. It is also valued for its drought tolerance, making it an excellent addition to xeriscaped gardens and native plant landscapes.
