Open Garden and Plant Sale

Save the date! Saturday May 13th, from 12-5 the garden will be open and the plant sales tables full of goodies for your garden.

It's been a busy year at illahe Rare Plants, we built a dedicated alpine production house, this unique greenhouse, with great ventilation from the full length roll up sides, was a recycling project from the old Squirrel Heights Gardens in the Woodstock neighborhood of Portland that Dave Peterson and Betty Berdan grew ferns in for years. I got the frames of it when they retired and sold the garden, and it has now been rebuilt with some local cedar and redwood from a tree salvage saw mill up the road. In our quest to be a sustainable, eco friendly nursery we added even more rain water capture including a large buried cistern to capture water off the shop roof. New garden additions include a planted rock wall, with sand beds to display alpine treasures. It was an extra cold and snowy winter and spring here so some construction is just getting started at the nursery, so please pardon our mess.

Amidst all of this I have been propagating plants like crazy and should have something for everyone in the plant sale area, from  starter plants for gardeners working on their first rock garden, some Juno, Pacific Coast, and dwarf bearded iris,  carnivores and bog plants, and even a few choice seedlings from Holubec's Chilean and European expeditions (our own stuff from New Zealand  likely won't be ready until the fall). We will also have a  selection of drought tolerant perennials, trees and succulents on hand as well for those looking to save on the water bill. When the wonderful Portland specialty nursery Woodland Way closed down last year, I got some of there stock plants, so for the bog and shade folks we will have some super cool Orchids, Asian skunk cabbage’s and more!

The Rock Garden should be full of flowers for our open garden and plant sale!

Hope to see you all at the Open Garden!
