I have long sold a P. barrettiae that originally came from Rae Selling Berry’s longtime gardener and one of my mentors Jack Poff. This past spring at an open garden, some botanists and keen plant enthusiasts were looking at it and remarking that it didn’t seem to fit straight P. barrettiae genes. After some research, and memory recall, It dawned on me that Jack Poff was bringing cuttings in all the time from his collecting trips into the mountains, Jack had a keen eye for good plants and was no doubt selecting hybrids. This unique Penstemon has huge pink flowers, robust glaucus blue foliage and a spreading habit to 3’ across. Very tough and dependable, should be in every rock garden!
