Lobelia laxiflora
native to Central America and parts of Mexico. It typically grows in a variety of habitats, including moist areas such as meadows, stream banks, and open woodlands. This species prefers well-drained soils and is often found at higher elevations, where it thrives in cool, moist conditions. Lobelia laxiflora is known for its tubular flowers, which can attract various pollinators, including bees and hummingbirds. The combination of flower shape, nectar richness, bright coloration, and accessibility makes Lobelia laxiflora a favored choice for hummingbirds, contributing to their role as important pollinators in the ecosystem. Our version has been exceedingly hardy, taking snow/ice/ winter wet and summer drought, temperatures into the low teens for multiple days at a time.
If happy it will take up some space, so at the back of the rock garden or in the dry meadow this must go.
This is a fantastic dryland plant needing no summer water, the hummingbirds duke it out over the blossoms starting in early summer and they last all the way to the frost.
