Whalenbergia albomarginata
Also known as the white-rimmed bluebell, this compact, mat-forming perennial is native to alpine and subalpine regions of New Zealand. It features delicate, pale blue to lilac star-shaped flowers with distinctive white-edged petals, blooming profusely through spring and summer. Absolute gem of a plant for rock gardens, troughs, or alpine beds. This one gave me fits for being tough to photograph on our New Zealand trip.
Prefers well-drained, gritty soil in full sun to partial shade. Requires protection from excessive winter wet. Drought-tolerant once established.
Hardy to USDA zone 6 (–10°C / 14°F); may need some shelter in colder or wetter climates, although it is proving very tough and adaptable in our Western Oregon Garden.
